Let's put some wheels on the cart.

Right now our form of democracy is a crude bobsled careening down a summer mountain slope.

It's only a matter of time until the bottom of that sled is torn loose or wears through, and we all know where the focus of the friction is going to be when that happens. Smarts a little bit just to think about it, doesn't it.

Yes, it can be a wild, exhilarating ride, but this isn't the amusement park.

Once we get some wheels on, we can add brakes and a steering mechanism, can't we.

Let's face it, we, the average citizens, really don't have much control over this thing we call democracy.

Disaffection with government is as common and as recurrent a theme as their is.

How many times have our mainstream genius political analysts told us, indeed the elected pols themselves, that the results of one election or another were a mandate for change? Countless times.

And, so, what have they changed?

The nameplates on the doors.

There does seem to be some validity to the saying that the more things change, the more they stay the same.

We still have campaign finance problems.

We still have pols devoting virtually all their time, energy and resources to their own political preservation.

Our bureaucracy is still as truculent as ever.

More often than not, the focus is still on making the symptom go away rather than eliminating the cause. (Making the messenger rather than the message the problem is one instance that immediately comes to mind.)

Typically, an effort is made to make the Sunday Daily Message one appropriate for prayerful consideration.

When one considers the impact an unaccountable government has, particularly when that government is the sole superpower of the planet, should this message appear on any day other than Sunday?

Is there a day more appropriate than Sunday for a plea for an end to stonewalling?

Is there a day more appropriate than Sunday for a plea for an end to MURDEROUS STONEWALLING???

Numerous references have been made in the Daily Messages to fascism, both as inherent in every society which has an "elective process" democratic form of government, and to the comparatively recent phenomena of world facism.

Virtually every society is politically goulash, a little of this, a little of that, and a lot of something.

My concern is the degree to which we are politically a de facto fascist society.

Without reservation, qualification, or condition, the one thing this society is not, is a merit society. Merit is the exception in this society.

By definition, any society in which the circumstance of birth predominantly determines the quality of life of the individual is not a merit society. Would anyone dispute that far and away the majority of those born into poverty in this society die in poverty?

Again we are talking about a matter of degree so, of course, to some degree every society is a merit society but this time the concern is the lack rather than the excess of the degree.

Is not merit an exact opposite of arbitrary?

Would anyone argue that get along, go along is not merit?

Would anyone argue that Political Correctness (PC) is not merit?

Would anyone argue that get along, go along and PC have been the behavior of choice during at least the past several decades?

Is not the PonyTail case proof positive of the degree of intolerance in this society for one who rejects get along, go along and political correctness?

Significant progress has been made on development of two of the three Marquee Issues, De Facto Fascism and Petition for Redress of Grievances.

Which leads us into a belated Good Bureaucrat award to James H. Billington of the Library of Congress for a program specifically designed to avoid the patronizing syndrome of sending Americans to Russia to tell the Russians how to run their lives.

Instead, thanks to Mr. Billington, about 2,000 local and national officials from Russia will visit the United States during August and September to show them how American democracy and civil society work.

Senator Ted Stevens of Alaska and Representative Charles H. Taylor earn credit for knowing a good idea when they see it. They sponsored the legislation which provided the funding necessary to enable Mr. Billington's idea to become a reality.

Kudos to all three gentlemen!

Now, can we just carry that sentiment one step further.

How about expressly acknowledging to them that maybe, just maybe we didn't get it 100% right, that maybe if they gave the matter a critical review they could even improve upon it.

Oh, let's say maybe they might consider substituting a draft/lottery selection process for the elective process.

How about a competition to see which Nation could come up with the most perfect form of democracy?

Wouldn't it be something if the cold war were replaced by hot competition to see which Nation could come up with the most perfect form of democracy!

STATEMENT OF ISSUE

It is proposed that the Constitution be amended to provide that our current "election" method of selecting our "representatives" be replaced with a lottery/draft method of selection.

I have been advocating this theory for some time, on some occasions using a lottery selection metaphor. I really like the notion of that. A lot.)

For those joining the Daily Message thread mid-stream, the Daily Message for February 1, 1999 proposes replacing the "elective" process for selecting public officials with a draft or lottery selection process as a mechanism for eliminating the sytem which allows powerful interests to control a supposedly democratic society.

The solution to the fascist element inherent in any "election selection process" form of democratic government is to replace elections with a lottery/draft selection process from a pool of qualified candidates so large that it can not be compromised.

The thing that really tickles my funny bone, is the likelihood that Russia would become Democratic before the United States. I can not see ourselves changing our beloved Constitution that radically in anything less than 10 years. All "emerging" democracies, including Russia, can draft a Constitution with a lottery/draft selection process in a heartbeat.

Would not the greatest benefit from a lottery/draft selection process be in the dregs, the residue left over? Let's say that the pool size for president is one thousand (1000). Instead of pouring campaign funds down a rat hole, significantly less funds would be used to train candidates and afterwards we would have 999 statesmen left over. Over a period of time, would that not create a very sophisticated society!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rarely do I pray to the Lord FOR something.

I am vastly more comfortable giving thanks to the Lord after the fact.

Today is an exception.

I seek the counsel of one of the Lord's servants about a matter which is either or both medical or nutritional in nature.

I suspect because of the hunger strike it is basically medical in nature.

Some of you may recall the DM in which it was revealed that the hunger strike is being conducted without the benefit of medical consultation.

On Friday or Saturday I saw a TV program which indicated that in victim's of a crushing injury, the destroyed muscle releases toxins, including potassium, which are often fatal. Months ago someone observed that bolemia victims sometimes die of potassium poisoning, and that such poisoning might be the real danger for me.

I believe the risk of such poisoning may increase rapidly over the next few weeks.

Additionally, I have been taking a daily potassium supplement each and every day of the hunger strike, a throw back to my pre-strike habit of getting a potassium fix the first thing every morning by eating a bannana for the dual purposes of mental acuity and heart health both of which are still hugely important.

My questions:

1. Should I discontinue taking the potassium supplement?

2. Are there other anti-toxin precautions which I should be taking?

Sunday's prayer appears to have been answered.

It produced an email with a significant amount of information on potassium related bodily processes. It did not unequivocally answer the take/not take issue, but prompted an exchange which allowed me to make a decision to discontinue taking the potassium supplement.

The basis of my decision is simply that now that the net caloric daily intake is approximately 400 calories per day, and shall decrease each week by 50 calories, there being if anything an increase in physical activity ("burn" activities are increasing), that a significant degree of tissue breakdown is occurring thereby producing a hyper potassium condition. It is assumed that it is more likely than not that the condition shall increase in degree as daily caloric net intake decreases.

A by product of the exchanges I believe was a more succinct expression of the issue, and absolutely at a minimum another expression of the issue. In any event, because the matter may literally be the difference between survival and succumbing, and there is still an element of doubt about the "safest" course of action to follow, relevant portions of the exchanges are set forth below the immediately following dashed line on the off chance that this version may resonate with someone and prompt a response which would leave nothing to chance. Am having a little trouble integrating your information into the hunger strike scenario and would appreciate your help sorting a few things out so I make the best use of the material and am able to post it as a DM.

My original mind set was that the issue was simply whether to continue or discontinue taking the potassium supplement.

The present diet is caloric deficient. That can not be remedied, consistent with the regimen of a hunger strike, a given.

It is not known whether the present diet is potassium deficient, or potassium excessive.

Accordingly, we apparently have a potassium sufficiency issue per se, i.e., if a minimum level is not maintained, a fatal heart beat irregularity will probably develop, your material:

Low pottasium leads to heartbeat irregularities. (otherwise understood to be potentially fatal)

It apparently is a given that a caloric deficient diet ultimately will cause the body to break down body tissues in order to convert the latent energy in the tissues into active energy, into fuel which the body engine can then consume.

This latter phenomena appears to present a second potassium issue. Your material included the following:

High pottasium due to release of pottassium from the cells into body fluid is dangerous due to heart beat irregularities, some of which can be fatal.

The toxin thing is what I thought killed Karen Carpenter. And I have more or less extrapolated from that premise to having a feeling that maybe it is a given that when body tissues are broke down, potassium in those tissues is not consumed, is not a fuel for the body engine to consume, but instead is a toxin which then builds up in the body fluids, your material:

Metabolic acidosis is caused by tissue breakdown.

Decreased Cardiac mass and output, dehydration and low serum pottassium (Merck Manual, 16th edition) Plasma levels of total amino acids and fatty acids are elevated indicating catabolism of tissue protein and triglyceride respectively.

Among her proposals are denying guns to people who committed violent offenses as juveniles, imposing federal limits on handgun purchases, reinstating a "cooling-off period" between the time a gun permit is applied for and the time it is approved, and requiring the registration of all handguns nationwide.

What in the hell is wrong with you?

How many times do you have to be told to stop trying to make the symptom go away!

How many times do you have to be told to start trying to eliminate the cause of a problem!

Causes yes, symptoms no, Janet!

I do not presume to be an expert in this area. I do have enough life experiences that I know there are at least two causal factors of gun related violence.

Factor one: the individual is sick.

Factor two: the individual is provoked.

Of course, sometimes, and probably in most instances, both factors are present.

Provoked is used in a sense inclusive of alienation. Acts which alienate an individual also have a capacity to provoke the individual.

Your statement not only does not address these causal factors, nor any other causal factors, but, indeed, has a capacity to provoke and thus to exacerbate rather than ameliorate the problem.

Your statement was made for the sole purpose of political expediency.

There is certainly precedent in this society for one's taking one thing or another as self evident.

Quite evidently to this writer at least, the basic, fundamental approach to problem solving of attacking the cause, rather than the symptom, of a problem is self evident.

For whatever the reason, that does not seem to be the case with the power structure of this society.

Making prostitution illegal has not worked. Prostitution is the world's oldest profession they tell me.

Making alcohol illegal did not work.

Making drugs illegal has not worked.

Why do these rocket scientists think that, in essence, "making guns illegal" is going to work?

Is not what they are doing analogous to squeezing a balloon to make it smaller?

I like the balloon analogy because you can make a balloon smaller by lowering the temperature, and there is a temperature allegory thread which runs through both of the causal factors, illness and provocation, cited in yesterday's DM as regularly associated with gun violence.

Temperature frequently accompanies illness. Does it not exist for the purpose of alerting us that the illness is present? And true, we sometimes need to treat excessive temperature, the symptom, in order to buy us the time necessary to cure the illness.

And, does not provocation heat things up, to the boiling point, we say, don't we.

Why do we shy from an analysis of the underlying root causes of so many of our problems?

Do we actually know what those problems are in significant part and don't want to admit it?

That's certainly what stonewalling is all about, isn't it!

I am proud that I am not one of "them". That is the one good thing about the unlawful suspensions, they are an unequivocal statement that I am not one of "them".

This is not a goody, goody two shoes matter, however.

This is about the heart and guts of democracy.

I know damn good and well that in 1944 and 1945 nobody would have dared to trivialize democracy, to thumb their nose at democracy in the way those unlawful suspensions do, to say that up is down and down is up, to say that those who are in control can do any damn thing they please. With impunity.

Those guys, the guys of 1944 and 1945, chose me to go to Boys State.

They spent their hard earned money to send me to Boys State.

I know what they expected me to learn by going there, and it wasn't the self centered, mercenary, chicanery, deceit and deception practiced today by those who are in control. Actually, most of the "practicing" is done by boot licking martinet, lackey suck ups to those who are in control. A bunch of losers. The losers who can't compete so they have to cheat bunch.

Nor was it to tolerate the bunch of garbage we have in control of our society now.

It was to stand up to "them". To do otherwise, to do anything less, would be to be an appeaser. A cowardly appeaser.

Not all of those who went to Boys State learned the lesson of that experience as well as I. Indeed, even some of those guys of '44 and '45 are now part of the problem.

Yesterday's DM listed basic and fundamental premises of the hunger strike.

The first premise was that two suspensions of the victim from the practice of law were unlawful.

Suffice it to say that both suspensions are predicated upon a decision the operative language of which is an oxymoron, to wit:

Without the benefit of competent medical testimony
neither the referee nor this court is qualified to
arrive at a diagnosis or prognosis concerning the
respondent's mental health. ... suspended ...
petition for reinstatement ... entertained ...
provide substantial evidence ... overcome ...
psychiatric problems.


The above language is from the last page of a so-called opinion by the minnesota supreme court, lack of capitalization deliberate.

It is an oxymoron to first admit they were "unqualified" to arrive at a diagnosis of an individual's mental health, but to nonetheless then say that the individual had psychiatric problems.

In twenty plus years of attempting to obtain relief no one has ever given a reasoned defense of the suspension. Scores of lawyers have had the opportunity to do so; none has.

In thousands of discussions with lay persons, no one has ever given a reasoned defense of the suspension; a minuscule few have dug in their heels and in effect said "it just is", no reason, but "it just is".

Stonewallers, I trust even you agree that any legal decision predicated upon an oxymoron is invalid!
